Customer had a major mistake during an overnight EDM (Electronic Discharge Machining) burn.

Problem:

Micro Precision Welding had an injection mold customer who had a major mistake during an overnight EDM (Electronic Discharge Machining) burn. One of the electrodes was mistakenly mounted backwards in the EDM tool holder. Because of the mistake, the metal mold ended up getting a 3 inch by 4 inch by half inch detail burned in backwards.

Solution:

Micro Precision Welding successfully built up the material that was burned off.  Micro Precision Welding used both temperature controlled TIG welding and laser welding to the repair the expensive mistake.  The repair took one day to complete at Micro Precision Welding’s office.

Benefit:
Starting over would have been very costly and time consuming due to the configuration of the mold and intricate detail. The injection mold customer was able to re-machine the mold to the proper dimensions the next day. The total downtime was a day and half from start to finish including final polish of the mold.
